I started working remotely over 2 years ago and one of the things I faced in my transition was the clutter in my home. Clutter? Yes, it was highly distracting and sometimes overwhelming. I never expected to feel anxious and be less productive because of the clutter in my home. Clutter is often an overlooked factor that can seriously hinder productivity and as a busy mama, I honestly don’t have time to waste! 

So how does clutter occur? Clutter can manifest in various forms—piles of papers on your desk, overflowing closets, or even digital disarray on your devices. Anyone keep files on their desktop? That’s me! No matter the source, clutter can have a significant impact on your ability to concentrate, work effectively, and ultimately thrive in your daily life.

Here are some ways clutter can sabotage your productivity:

  • Mental Distraction: A cluttered environment can be mentally overwhelming, constantly pulling your attention in different directions. This mental distraction can make it challenging to focus on the task at hand.
  • Wasted Time: Searching for misplaced items can eat up a surprising amount of time. How often have you spent precious minutes searching for your keys, a document, or your favorite pen?
  • Stress and Anxiety: Clutter can contribute to stress and anxiety. It creates a sense of chaos and disorder, making it difficult to relax and unwind after a long day.
  • Reduced Creativity: A cluttered space can stifle creativity. It’s challenging to think outside the box when your physical and mental space is cluttered.
