As I scroll through my social media feeds, filled with first-day-of-school photos, it’s hard not to reflect on the changes we, as families, are going through. The start of a new school year brings with it a whirlwind of new schedules, routines, supplies, new teachers, friends, challenges, and experiences. Let’s not forget the extracurricular activities and sports that are bound to keep our calendars jam-packed.
Just this week, I’ve logged countless entries into our family calendar, and to be honest, it’s enough to make my head spin. Back to school events, piano, cheer and baseball entries just to name a few for us. With so much going on, I’ve decided to take a step back and give my brain a break from the “back-to-school busy.”

Instead, I’m shifting my focus to a few questions that I believe will set our family up for success this school year:
1. What can we do as a family to make this year great?
2. How can we improve upon last year?
3. How can we give back to our school and community?
4. How can we support our children to help them feel confident, brave, and loved each day?
5. What challenges might our children face, and how can we prepare ourselves to guide them through these experiences?
Yes, it’s a big day, a big week, and an even bigger year ahead. But focusing on what we can control and setting our sights on what we want to achieve as a family feels like a much needed break from the “busy” and shifting our focus to what really matters to us. Let’s make this year one that’s not just busy, but fulfilling and meaningful for our families.
